The small city of Murakami is on the northern coast of Japan in Niigata Prefecture. It is famous for its dried salted salmon (cured by the cold winter air), green tea (Murakami is Japan's northernmost tea growing district), and over 500 traditional "Machiya" houses. During the city's spring festival around 4000 dolls are put on display for the public in many of the Machiya. The city is also known for its hot springs.
