The city of Naruto in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan is famous for whirlpools that form in the Naruto Strait close to the Onaruto bridge. It is home to Otani pottery, a style of ceramics that originally specialized in producing large containers for indigo dye. The first two temples on the Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage are also located in Naruto. The pilgrimage was founded in the 8th Century AD by Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi.
